이 곡은 중세 그레고리오 성가, 〈Media vita in morte sumus — 삶의 한가운데, 우리는 죽음 속에 있다> 에 기초하고 있다.

‘중세’는 이후의 사람들, 특히 르네상스인들의 눈에는 ‘무지의 어둠 속에 머물던 시대’로 비쳤다. 그러나 과도한 정보와 기술 속에 살아가는 현대인에게, 지식의 양이나 속도가 곧 지성을 의미하지는 않는다. 오히려 정보의 과잉은 혼란과 불안을 낳고, 기술의 발전은 그 혼란을 더욱 심화시킨다. 

지금 우리에게 필요한 것은 더 많은 정보가 아니라, 집중된 정신과 집중된 시간이다. 중세의 성가는 이후의 음악처럼 복잡한 구조나 감각을 지니지 않았지만, 그 단순함 속에 오히려 깊은 몰입과 통합의 힘이 있었다.

이 작품은 그러한 중세 성가적 접근을 통해, 죽음에 대한, 그리고 삶에 대한 사유의 시간으로 들어간다. 고요하고, 왜소하며, 앙상하지만, 그 안에서 여전히 아름답게 깜박이는 생명의 빛을 바라본다 — 우주 속에 놓인 인간 존재의 덧없음과, 그 덧없음이 품고 있는 신비로운 지속의 감각을 따라.​​

This piece is based on the medieval Gregorian chant 〈Media vita in morte sumus — In the midst of life, we are in death〉.

The “Middle Ages” were seen by later generations—especially the people of the Renaissance—as an age shrouded in the darkness of ignorance. Yet for those of us living amid the overwhelming tide of information and technology, the quantity or speed of knowledge no longer equates to wisdom. Excessive information breeds confusion and anxiety, while technological advancement only deepens that turmoil.

What we need today is not more information, but a concentrated mind and focused time. Though medieval chant lacks the complex structure and sensuality of later music, within its simplicity lies a profound power of immersion and unity.

Through this medieval, chant-like approach, this work enters a space of contemplation on death—and on life. In the stillness, fragile and bare, it gazes upon the faint yet beautiful flicker of life’s light — tracing the fleetingness of human existence in the universe, and the mysterious sense of continuity it holds within.
