'Fons Lucis'는 라틴어로 '빛의 샘'을 뜻한다. 샘은 끊임없이 솟아오르는 근원이며, 빛은 모든 생명의 원천이다. 고대로부터 빛은 생명과 불가분의 관계로 여겨져 왔다. 태초의 어둠을 가르고 최초로 창조된 것이 빛이었듯, 빛 없이는 생명도 존재할 수 없다. 식물은 광합성으로, 동물은 그 식물을 통해, 모든 생명체는 궁극적으로 태양빛의 에너지로 살아간다. 빛은 단순한 물리적 현상을 넘어 생명 그 자체의 은유이다.

정보가 범람하는 디지털 시대, 우리는 화면의 인공적 빛 속에서 살아간다. 그러나 그 빛은 차갑고 평면적이다. 현대인은 자연의 빛, 살아있는 빛으로부터 점점 멀어지고 있다. 신체를 통한 체화된 경험이 사라지는 시대에, 우리에게 필요한 것은 진정한 생명력의 원천으로 돌아가는 일이다. 빛의 온기, 빛의 역동성, 빛이 만들어내는 생명의 약동을 다시 체감해야 한다.

빛은 이중적이다. 아침 햇살은 부드럽게 생명을 깨우지만, 한낮의 태양은 강렬하게 작열한다. 빛은 씨앗을 틀게 하고 숲을 자라게 하지만, 동시에 강한 자외선은 미생물을 살균하고 뜨거운 열기는 사막을 만든다. 빛은 생성과 소멸, 양육과 파괴를 동시에 품고 있는 양면적 존재이다. 이 작품은 빛의 이러한 복합적 면모를 다룬다.

김새암은 오랜 시간 빛을 소재로 작업해왔다. '빛의 춤 Danse de Lumière', '빛으로 가득 찬 시간 Un temps plein de lumière ', '빛의 감각 Touch of Light' 등에서 빛과 생명력의 관계를 탐구해온 작곡가는, 이번 작품에서 빛의 근원으로 향한다. 화음 색채가 만들어내는 여러 빛깔의 음향, 부딪히고 부서지며 변화하는 소리의 울림을 통해 빛의 다층적 성격을 구현한다. 부드러운 아침빛의 따스함에서 작열하는 정오의 강렬함으로, 다시 황혼의 부드러운 스펙트럼으로 이어지는 빛의 여정을 음향적 텍스처의 변화와 대비로 그려낸다.

이 작품은 시청각적 묘사가 아닌, 빛에 대한 직접적 체감을 의도한다. 청자의 몸 안에서 빛이 스며들고, 빛의 에너지가 전달되며, 빛의 양면성이 울려 퍼지도록 작곡되었다. 생명력의 원천인 동시에 파괴의 힘을 지닌 빛, 그 근원적 에너지를 온몸으로 경험하는 시간이 될 것이다.

“Fons Lucis” means “Source of Light” in Latin.
A spring is a ceaselessly rising origin, and light is the source of all life. Since ancient times, light has been regarded as inseparable from life itself. Just as light was the first creation that pierced the darkness at the beginning of time, no life can exist without it. Plants live through photosynthesis, animals through the plants they consume — ultimately, all living beings draw their energy from sunlight. Light, therefore, is more than a physical phenomenon; it is a metaphor for life itself.

In today’s digital age, overflowing with information, we live surrounded by the artificial light of screens. Yet that light is cold and flat. Humanity has become increasingly distant from natural, living light. In an era where embodied experience through the senses is vanishing, what we need is to return to the true source of vitality — to once again feel the warmth, the dynamism, and the pulsation of life that light creates.

Light is dual in nature. The morning sun awakens life gently, while the midday sun burns with intensity. Light nurtures seeds and makes forests grow, yet the same ultraviolet rays sterilize microbes, and the scorching heat forms deserts. It holds within itself both creation and destruction, nourishment and devastation. This work explores the multifaceted nature of light.

Composer Sae-ahm Kim has long engaged with the theme of light in her works — such as “Danse de Lumière (Dance of Light),” “Un temps plein de lumière (A Time Filled with Light),” and “Touch of Light.” In Fons Lucis, she turns toward the very origin of light. Through the resonance of harmonic colors and the collisions, fractures, and transformations of sound, the work embodies light’s layered character. The piece traces a journey of light — from the tender warmth of dawn, to the blazing intensity of noon, and finally to the soft spectrum of twilight — rendered through shifting textures and contrasts in sound.

This composition does not aim to depict light visually, but to evoke its direct sensory presence. It is written so that light may permeate the listener’s body, transmitting its energy and echoing its dual nature. Light — the primal force of life, yet also of destruction — becomes an experience to be felt with the whole body: an immersion into the very source of vitality itself.
